The first time: Disappointed
The first online shop was yesstyle. This website was very beautiful and had more than 8000 types of clothes. So I decided to have a try. This online shop belonged to Hongkong. I knew that Hongkong was a part of china. But at that time I didn’t know that price there was much higher than China mainland. For example, a jacket sold in Jakarta only at $40, but at yesstyle, it needed $20-30. I bought 2 T-shirts, one skirt and it cost me $74. The shipping fee was $14. It was quite expensive, but comparing with that of Jakarta, it was a bit cheaper. So I moved on to payment. However, the staff of West Union told me I had to pay excess fee for service. So at last I used Paypal.

7 days later, my goods arrived. The new arrivals sold good. The first T-shirt (buying price $17) sold at $29 and the skirt (buying price 32) at $50. And another T shirt (buying price $21) intended to sell at $40, but nobody wanted it. Obviously, goods from Hongkong are only suitable to sell at exclusive shop, not for retail. So I googled some new online shops.

The second time: happy but not satisfied
Fashion wholesale is my second online websites. It really surprised me because there are more than 22000 kinds of products and a lot of them are only $5, even some priced $2.99. The city of this online websites named Hangzhou and located in China, a place where I first felt should be very poor, and the gap is probably the same with the difference between Jakarta and Irian Jaya. Things on this website are very cheap, but I worried about quality and decided to only buy a few, so I purchase with a small order tentatively. 7 items of clothes totaled $ 25.76, and parcels weighted 1.95 kg and DHL shipping was $17.4. Because this incredible low price, I only paid $43.16 by paypal.

5 days later, I received a package sent by DHL. After received the parcel I could not wait to open, and I find that clothing quality is good, but not good enough, and comparing with Hong Kong's clothing, there is no substantial difference. It was really a surprise to me compared with my last buying, on the contrast, I got the feeling of excessive profit after I had bought a long dress at the low price of $ 4.65 and sold out the next day at $ 28, a t-shirt priced $ 3.8 soled out at $19, and 3 chiffon dresses priced at $ 1.99 sold out at $15. This purchase was a little bittersweet, my delight is that this online shop is suitable for me, what disturb me was that I don’t know whether it was the best. The third time: annoyed
The third website, asia-fashion-wholesale, was the ugliest online shop I had ever seen, which has only 2600 types and is absolutely in disorder. I ordered 6 items and cost me only 24.9 dollars. Their customer service said that parcels weighted 1.7 kg and EMS shipping was $ 20.6, so the total cost was $ 45.5. And I thought EMS, a well-known express delivery company I heard before, was the best.

The parcel had not arrived until 9 days later. I was confused and emailed the customer service and two hours later I finally got their reply. They told me that the speed of EMS was always unstable and I should wait patiently. I have no idea except waiting. 16 days passed and finally the postman arrived with my parcel. I asked him why it took so long time, but he answered reluctantly, “you can chose DHL anyway, why EMS!”

I was very reluctant to pay the freight because this is higher than the items’ price. What’s more, one of the 8 Clothes lost a button and another skirt had a hole. And one cloth, purchased at 7 dollars was taken back by one custom an hour later after sold. Because there was a crack on the shoulder. This time I really believe in the saying, what price, what good. Goods from this online shop was cheap, but the quality was shoddy.

The fourth time: failure
My fourth attempt was a new website zipia. This one had very nice pictures and more than 4500 kinds of products. At first sight I felt it looks like the first website I mentioned. Price on this Website seems even higher than the stores in Jakarta. After searched for a long time, I do not know where to start.

Finally, I Chose a "714-washing zipper skinny-41-K04506". This one asked for $31. I originally intended to know what kind of clothes was so expensive. However, at the step of payment , suddenly such a dialog box came out.

Of course, I gave up. With 300 dollars you could only buy a maximum of 10 on zipia, but can buy almost 50 on fashion wholesale.

I have purchase cargo from more than a dozen places before, and after comparison of China's goods, it is clear that gross profit of Chinese cloth can reach 100% in general. From my four different shopping online experiences, I have summed up some conclusion.

First of all, price is very important. The price of yesstyle and zipia online shop is ridiculously high, plus shipping freight, sometimes more expensive than to buy in Jakarta shop, so buying from these two on-line shop can not make money.

Clothing from Asia-fashion-wholesale is indeed cheap, but the quality is really bad, so it is not a good choose. Comparatively speaking, the price in fashion wholesale is slightly higher than asia-fashion-wholesale’s. However, product quality and packaging are all good, so only in term of goods, fashion wholesale is the best.

The second point is the range of products. For wholesalers and retailers, we need a lot of styles to attract customers, so the range of products is very important. The current situation, zipia, asia-fashion-wholesale, yesstyle have only about 3000 items, while the products suit to be sold in Indonesia is around 1000 items. However, fashion wholesale has about 22000 items. So there are about 5000 items suitable for sold in Indonesia.

In addition, shipping fee is also an important factor. Among the four websites, zipia is the cheapest. However, thinking of zipia’s ridiculously high prices of goods, it is not a good choice.

Yesstyle set a package shipping fee of $14, which only suit for the small parcels with 4 or 5 clothes, but clothes are too experience. Shipping fee of fashion wholesale is relatively reasonable. The first weight 500 grams needs $9.99, added weight 500 g $1.99, and if you order more than 10 kg, only need 4 dollars per Kg. So the advantages of wholesale are obvious. Asia-fashion-wholesale’s shipping fee is the highest, to Indonesians the first weight 500 grams of $10.6, added weight 500 grams $3.4, and their parcel delivery speed is really slow. In fact, asia-fashion-wholesale is the worst in delivery.

Naughty research: a girl’s accosting experience

Have you ever thought what kind of clothes you wear will be more eye-catching and bring more accosting from guys? It is true that people who wear nice clothes will always attract more eye sights. And people always think that the more famous brand clothes with high price we wear, the more rate of second glance we will get. However it turned out wrong when I have done a naughty research recently.

First of all, let me introduce something about myself before my accosting experience. I am currently working in an IT company as an office clerk in Pinang. Although I’m not bad looking, I don’t have much social intercourse as I always run between my office and home, what I do most is only dealing with my computer. My life is a bit boring like this.

It was one day when I was surfing the internet, I saw a romantic story between one handsome guy and a beauty. Suddenly a strange idea flashed my mind -- will I have chance to run into a charming boy or even meet my Mr. right if I dress up better?

Quickly I started to place an order for two clothes with different styles from monsoon.co.uk in that evening. God favored me so much that the weather was sunny when I received my parcel on that weekend. So I dressed up nicely and went out with full of joy. It was a fabulous day for me to enjoy the sunshine in a café near Komtar as I could feel the glance from nearby tables.

The next weekend, I chose a cute long coat from dressme.com, which was a different style from previous one. I was especially relaxed with it as it was not so noble looking. Later one guy came to accost me on the bus stop and took my e-mail, which satisfied my vanity a lot. 

After these two experience, I grasped some basic skills on how to meet someone unexpectedly (we can discuss about the skills if you are interested in it too). Meanwhile, I have had a big curiosity on how to obtain higher glances and accosting times. So I started to do my formal naughty research – I was successfully accosted by 71 male aged from 23 to 35 with my 20 different clothes in the next three months.

During these three months, I have chosen various clothes from different online shops, ranging from dozens to thousands. To be frankly, it was a bit gloomy to buy all those clothes, I had to choose clothes not only unique but also within my budget. However, I sacrificed all these, only for completing my meaningful research successfully.

Now you can see the following chart which I have written my summary with detail information. It was a bit difficult to summarize the discipline. What I could be sure was that not only the expensive clothes could attract more accosting. For example, I was accosted 3 times when I wore a dress from tiza.com while I was accosted 7 times when I wore another dress from wallis.co.uk. For another example, my accosting times raised up to 20 times when I wore some fine clothes from wholesale-dress.net.

There was a white coat looking especially gorgeous, which made me accosted 5 times within one day. Was it quite strange? I also couldn’t understand it. Was it because of its attractive design? Or was it looking more easygoing for its cheap price?

Here are some summaries I made according to my statistical data:
1. Clothes with cheaper price can attract more accosting. My research was a proof.
2. Fashionable clothes can be more attractive, such as the white coat I referred just now.
3. Clothes from Korea and China has higher accosting rate than those from Europen areas.

There maybe some other tips you have to know:
1. Go for more places rather than only one place.
2. Don’t be too complacent whether you are successful or not. Be careful to be cheated.
3. Do not go to bars which are the most unreliable even if you can get highest accosting rate there.
4. Give your number and develop your relationship with the one whom you really like!

Not long ago, I bought some underwears , but after I have weared some time, they became deformed. Anger filled in my mind, so I described the condition to the customer online of the seller and asked for a return.

Below is a basic summary of what additional costs you may pay according to:

the type of goods you buy
where they are purchased from

If you buy goods online from within the European Union (EU)

You will not be charged Customs Duty or import VAT.

Alcohol and tobacco products from within the EU cannot be sent to the UK unless arrangements have been made to pay UK Excise Duty in advance.

The 27 EU countries are the UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, The Irish Republic, Denmark, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania.

If you buy goods online from a country outside the European Union, for instance the USA, Canada, China, Australia

You will be charged:

Customs Duty if the amount of duty is €10 (£7) or over
Import VAT if the value of the goods is €22 (£18) and over

If you buy goods online from one of the European Union 'Special Territories'

Customs Duty will not be charged.
Import VAT is charged if the value of the goods is €22 (£18) and over.

The EU 'Special Territories' are The Ǻland Islands (Finland), The Canary Islands (Spain), The Channel Islands (UK), The French Overseas Departments of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique and Reunion and Mount Athos also known as Agion Poros (Greece).

If you buy goods online from Jersey or Guernsey

Customs duty will not be charged.
Import VAT is charged if the value of the goods is €22 (£18) and over.
Many Channel Islands companies are part of a ‘VAT pre-payment’ scheme. This means you will be asked to pay import VAT if the value of the goods is over €22 (£18) at the time you pay for the goods. In this case you will not have to pay any additional costs when you receive your goods.
Excise Duty will be charged for some goods, for example alcohol and tobacco.

Customs duty is a tax charged on goods produced outside the EU. It is controlled by HM Customs & Excise. Once duty is paid, the goods are in 'free circulation' and can move throughout the EU without restriction.

What is Excise Duty?
Certain goods such as wines, spirits, cigars, cigarettes and tobacco are subject to what is called excise duty. When you buy excisable goods in the UK the price you pay includes this tax. However, if you import these goods either from the EU or from outside the EU, you will have to pay Excise Duty and VAT on them. The Excise Duty is often more than the cost of the goods, and private consumers buying excisable goods over the Internet should be extremely careful as there are different regulations governing the purchase of these goods on the Internet.

What is VAT?
Value Added Tax (VAT) a tax normally charged on the supply of goods (and services) made by a VAT registered business. However, imported goods are also subject to VAT. This is to prevent a purchaser gaining an unfair advantage by buying non-EU goods VAT free.

The report suggested that one in four shoppers failed to make checks into a seller’s background when buying online, with many happy to turn a blind eye if the price was right.

Expensive price is the main reason. A lot of people feel that genuine brand charge unfair price. Looking at the following picture, guess the price of the medium size Gucci bag. It is incredible expensive, claiming $1,595. Only a small group of people can afford such expensive exquisite. However, how much is the producing cost? Definitely less than half the price. Some people believe these luxury brands earn fat profit from the customers and they don’t want to pay but they actually like the design very much? What would this kind of people do?

Counterfeits may also appeal to those people who want to demonstrate their status, but don’t have the funds to do so with genuine products.

I do think those brands over charge the customers. But their design is good and beautiful. That is why it attracts so much people. They like these products but can not afford it. So the demand for counterfeit increases quickly.

Leading counterfeit goods market

According to Italy’s National Retailers Association, 7.2 billion Euros was generated in sales of counterfeit goods in 2006. In 2007, Confcommercio, the Italian Commerce Federation, found that Italy topped the list in Europe as a producer of counterfeit goods, slipping down only to third place on a worldwide scale.

As well as being a destination for fake luxury goods, Italy is also a major producer of counterfeit goods. In an article by Robert Galbraith for the International Herald Tribune, Silvio Paschi, secretary general at Italy's anti-counterfeiting agency, Indicam, gives the example of a counterfeit perfume being sold in Europe to illustrate the nature of the problem. It was an imitation of one of the best- known brands. After extensive tests, the company that makes the original perfume realized that the manufacturing effort had been international. The scent was produced in the Far East, the bottle was made in a Central European country and the label was designed and attached in Italy.

Organized and international crime

Organized crime is heavily involved in the counterfeit trade in Italy: "Organized crime is getting involved in all areas of counterfeiting, because it is such a lucrative activity with much lower risk than other areas, such as drugs." Antonio, head of a government anti-counterfeiting taskforce said in an International Herald Tribune article.

The same article goes on to describe how Italian counterfeiters are just a part of an international production chain whereby semi-finished products are brought into Italy, to be completed, thus making it difficult to identify the goods as counterfeit when they enter the country.

If anybody who want to buy Italian luxury brand, please be careful, not waste your money to buy a fake product.

If you just like my sister, the return period expired and without warranty card and invoice at hand, what can you do? Contact your lawyers, if the lawyer cannot help you either, then you have to face the reality and next time be prudent when buying.

My second team buy experience happened two weeks later. Because of a sudden drop in temperature, I need to buy some clothing and shoes to keep warm. But at that time, I was very busy with my new job and had no time for shopping. So I turned to internet.

I wanted to buy a boot just like UGG. I found a lot of beautiful boots but most were too expensive for me. Then once again, I googled for team buy post. I found a suitable one in a college forum. Guess how much discount I got? 25%, isn’t it amazing? After that, I fell in love with this way of shopping.

I thought they were laying off like 30,000 employess in the USA. 10,000 in Willmington Ohio closing the Airpark. What a difference a few months make.

Then, not even 1 year after that almost 10 months later they decided to change all the routing codes for packages, again.. over 1 weekend, that put us back a week in deliveries.AGAIN, more customers jumped ship cause management screwed up AGAIN. this is just 1 reason the company is closing facilities in the US.THEY SUCK!

Well, here we go! The comments have not finished.

Mismanaged.. Example: A few years after the merger with Airborne, DHL decided to move their WHOLE Ohio hub to a new airport all in ONE weekend. That totally screwed up everything, Packages weren't making it to the correct destination, planes were late coming in, that put deliveries behind almost 2 full weeks!! We lost Thousands of customers due to that.

Too bad DHL is closing 80% of their facilities in the US. This company is SO mismanaged and doing everything the WRONG way they have to cut their losses and go only international service. they are laying off almost 10,000 jobs nationwide and closing EVERY sort center they speak of in this video. I've been there over 15 years and I'm out of a job.. F the GERMANS!! They should have NEVER bough Airborne Express 5 years ago.. Airborne would still be here today if they left us at AIRBORNE alone!!

I think DHL has done well they are actually bigger than Fedex and UPS i stay in Uganda but they are all over the place plus their service is good...i like the brand too

Seeing the title, you may ask why? Actually business practices and relationships in China are very different from those commonly encountered in the other countries. If a trusting relationship is cultivated, business transactions may follow. For clothing wholesale dealers, there are at least two advantages.

1. Get the latest information about new arrivals and out of stocks.
This is very important to wholesale dealers. Seldom people like out of fashion, almost everyone wants the latest. If you can know the next arrivals and buy it quickly, you can get the clothing of the latest fashion before any of your competitors. People will rush to your shop and high profit is right before your hands.

If some of your clothing have something wrong, and you have to exchange them. In order to save the shipping fee, you cannot send them back as soon as you find. You have to accumulate to a certain number and send them together. But if you send them back and find they are out of stock, what can you do, waiting for restock? Of course it is not a good idea. The best solution is to send them back just before out of stock. So keeping good relation with the suppliers is very important, because they can inform you about which styles will be out of stock.

2. Ask suppliers for advice.
As a wholesale dealer, you can not concentrate all you efforts on fashion, but to your suppliers, it is their jobs, so you can ask them for advice, ask your suppliers to recommend some styles for you, which will do you a great help.

But how to keep good relationship with the suppliers?

First, pay your bill on time. Some dealers reluctant to pay on time, they always delayed, which undermine the cooperation

Second, do not complain in angry, tell your suppliers how to improve their service instead. Everyone would make mistakes, don’t shout angrily to them. Just tell them they made a mistake and how you want them to patch up.

Third, solve small problems by yourself. If the clothing only have very small problems and you can solve very easily. In this case, do not send them back, which will save time for both parties.

Fourth, give feedback of sales status. The suppliers also need to know how their clothing sell in the market and you can provide them with such kind of information.

I suppose every one who ever buy clothing on line must have this kind of shopping experience: the clothing is not exactly the one you see in the seller’s shop or what it looks like in your mind.

So far, I do not how to figure out the problem in essence. However, you could minimize the disappointment by the following reference program:

1. Pay attention on the clothing’s weight

This method does not apply to all products, but for clothing, it works some time. I always believe that the weight of clothing is directly proportional to its price. :)…

2. Pay attention on the clothing’s size

In different countries, there are different size standard. Like EUR size, USA size, International size, China size etc. Here is something I must point out. Many online shop operations personnel describe some clothes as free size. Free size is a fuzzy concept. If you buy a coat in an Asian online shop, the free size fit for people whose height is between 160cm and 165cm, if you are European, although you buy free size clothing in your country and it fits well, if you do that in an Asian online shop, you just make a big mistake. Here is a size chart from an online shop, which may do you a favour before you shop in foreign online shops.

3. Refer to the clothing’s fabric and price

High-grade fabric clothing has much higher price. For example, silk dress is more expensive than chiffon dress, imitation rabbit hair coat is much cheaper than 100% rabbit hair coat. Just look the clothing’s fabric and its price, then you know whether it worth that much.

Well, that is three methods to minimize your disappointment when you shop online which I have figured out so far. There must be some other better methods I have not came up with, if I know, I will share it as soon as possible.

Changed transportation mode of my order

The long johns still are on the way. Did not get what I said? Check My changing attitude of taobao.com.

I placed the order last Wednesday, and I chose an express company to deliver my goods. However when I checked the transportation mode last night, it became another express company, which charged much more shipping fee. The good news is the online seller did not ask me to pay more. And the bad news is the direct consignee will have to go to the express company by himself to pick up the package.

Actually, I think the way the things change are not good news to both of us.

For online sellers, since they change the express company to a much more expensive one, then they will earn less. I totally understand their thought. If they still deliver the goods by what I chose in the order, then I will never get the clothes, for the mailing address is out of that express company’s transport range. If the online seller asks me to pay more for the changing transportation mode, then I may shut down the order. Of course, the seller does not want to see that happened, for the number of failed transactions in their transaction record will increase. If the seller cancelled my order, then the seller’s credibility will be cut down by the platform admin, who take charge of monitoring the sellers’ behavior and reward or punish sellers according to the platform rules. Then there came the last option, change the transportation mode, although this kind of handling method will cause the online seller earn less money or even can not earn the product cost, however, it is a way to keep customers like me, and they could balance the revenue and expenditure next time when I buy other clothes in their online shop.

For me, I will have to confirm receipt until my parents sign for the package, but the expensive express company will not deliver the goods to my home, the one and only way to get the package is going to the express company and take it. That is very inconvenient. It entirely goes against the advantage of online shopping and my intention of shopping online.

The topic seems have nothing to do with shopping guideline or transaction security, shipping fee control or products quality. But for online shop keepers, I hope this short article may make then think one question: do I need to modify my shop’s pages?

Today, I read an article and watch a video about page speed. Matt Cutts, google software engineer, imply that web page loading speed would be considered as one factor of page ranking. Related article and video: Google: Page Speed May Become a Ranking Factor in 2010.

Well, the short news seems have little relation of today’s topic, if you think so, you are wrong.

As for me, when I shopping online, if it takes me longer than one minute to see the whole web page, I will give up and turn to another website and never come back. For online shop keepers, that is not a good idea.

So what do online sellers do can speed up web page loading speed and then attract, keep more customers? A method I suggest online shop keepers to use is deleting junk code of web page.

Here is a definition of junk code：any code which have no meaning to search engine and even it is deleted, it does no effect to the webpage content. For example, when you upload a product to an online shopping mall, you need to describe product’s related information, you need to put some words beside it. Many people edit the document in Microsoft Office software such as words, tables, pictures, hyperlinks etc. Then they copy the text and paste it to the online shopping mall backstage management system. This method is very efficient. However, it cause a seriously problem-too much junk code, the code include document description, author information, too many tags which may not supported in other system. All these junk code must be removed. Otherwise, the web page loading speed will be super slow. What is more, according the articles in the first paragraph, your site rank would be affected.

Much deeper reasons are: When your web page contains too much code, then it will take your potential customers longer time to open it, especially when these code has no real meanings. You see, deleting junk code of web page is necessary. At least, you benefit two points: first, you help search engine understand your web page meaning in short time. Second, you save your potential customers time on waiting.

Last month, I read an article about malicious sellers’ retaliatory behavior for buyers who leave bad comments in their online shop. The matter is very complex. Someone buy a gift for his friend on taobao.com, a Chinese B2C online shopping website, and the shipping address is his friend’s working place address. When he commented the deal as not good, the seller become not happy and sent his friend threatening text messages and phone calls, what is worse, the seller publish his friend personal information on internet, then there comes more information harassment to his friend. Because of this matter, his friend is in danger of losing job.

When I read the article, I learn one thing, that is: never leave your office place address when you shopping online. And the second thing I learned is: I will never buy anything from taobao.com.

Once I bought a set of long johns for myself in another online shop on taobao.com, the price is good, and the clothes are not bad. Then I told my friends of the online shop, and she said she would take a look. Maybe she will buy something from the online shop I mentioned. Even she does not buy anything now, perhaps someday, she will tell her friends and work mates that shop.

See, that is the power of word of mouth. An excellent shopping experience on one customer can bring the sellers a good number of new customers. Furthermore, the maintenance of an old customer is much easier than developing a new customer. So, for online sellers, it is very important to catch the first customer who would like to help them do free advertising. Next time, online retailers blog team will write an article about what online sellers do could help to catch the first customer like me.

I used to work in the customer service department in a Chinese exporting corporation, mainly responsible for checking client’s address before dispatching package. Google earth is the software that I used most to confirm client’s address. With a postcode or a city name via Google earth, I could always find the resting information to complete the address. But sometimes I encountered some addresses without any above information but a street No., it is really impossible to find more information to complete them via Google earth. The only choice is either to call clients or mail them to find the full address information. However due to the language barrier, many calls would not work well, while mails took too much time to get client’s response. Finally, orders without complete address information would probably be postponed or sent to a wrong place.

So what can we do about address to dodge delay or loss of package? Here I would like to share with you three tips learnt from customer service department in address filling.

Tip 1: Supply complete address information
When you register in an online shop, you should supply complete address includes country/nation, city, state/province, street No., house number and postal code. You are very familiar with your location, but the delivery companies are not; so be patient to write down all information.

Tip 2: Use standard address Sequence
Different countries have different address sequence. For instance, in China, people like to put country/nation at the first place, followed by province, city, and finally street No, house number. But it is entirely reverse in European countries and America. Here standard sequence means the sequence in America, first house number, then street No, city, state/province, country/nation. Postcode code usually is required to write separately.

Tip 3: Spelled in English letters
Make sure that the address is spelled in English. Shopping online is a global activity that may involve countries speaking different languages. Whenever you order from a foreign country, be sure to spell the address in English letters.
